1. The Mail Online article links with the hypodermic needle model because it suggests that violent video games encourage/influence young people to engage in violent activity and become very aggressive people. It also links with the theory because it suggests that violent video games inject the violent behaviour seen in them into the audience (those who play the game), causing them to recreate these events in reality.
2. The coverage of the Talk Talk hacking case links with the Hypodermic Needle Model because it says that the suspect was a 'violent video game addict', which suggests that the aforementioned video games 'inject' the audience with the violent scenes and encourages them to perform the scenes in real life. Someone might criticise this front page because it could be said that the information the Daily Mail has isn't reliable and is biased to influence the readers to believe their view on video games.
Two-step flow model
1. In my opinion, I think that the two-step flow model is still relevant today because it includes the influence society has on a specific person and how this causes them to view certain stories.
2. TotalBiscuit would fit into the two-step flow model as an opinion leader as his product placement via advertisement or general brand favourites would encourage his audience to, if not have similar views on them, then to at least have an interest in the brands and what they produce. His views would also make an impression on his viewers and therefore encourages them to have similar opinions.
3. The Telegraph's article on Influential tweeters fits into the two-step model because it not only shows that single media outlets are the only influence on the audiences opinions but shows that other people's opinion are influential on the audiences opinions, particularly those who have large followings.
4. Jamal Edwards fits into the two-step model because he doesn't 'just consume' the media he sees and continued to follow his own direction. This could also be said for the audience of Edwards as they could be influenced by his approach to the media therefore wouldn't just consume the media in the way the producers intended..
Uses and Gratification
Diversion: escape from everyday problems and routine - entertainment. TV programmes such as X-Factor allow the audience to kick back and relax when they perhaps get back from work. Essentially what they do is, they meet the needs of people who seek escapism, a sense of entering another world perhaps full of more entertainment. What this does, is it eases some stress off of people who perhaps cant face or deal with reality at the moment, instead the want to divulge into watching reality TV programmes or playing video games, entering a world with numbs out reality. X factor, for entertaining purposes does this well.
Personal Relationships: using the media for emotional and other interaction (e.g. developing affection for characters in TV) Print such as Heat magazine enables the audience to connect with different lives and worlds, as well as keeping up to date, the rumours or perhaps the gossip fulfils the audiences wishes, and they can really connect and grow a certain attachment with celebrities in particular. Although worlds apart, e-media such as Snapchat also enables people to match themselves to other lives.
Personal Identity: finding ourselves reflected in texts or learning behaviour and values from the media. Reality TV or documentary (Educating Yorkshire) are good examples. Cinema movies such as Step Up hold multi-strand narratives within which the audience can connect to, with different characters. In this case, the movie is about finding who you truly are and going ahead with your passion regardless of what anyone believes. Therefore, we can say that the audience can learn an empowering moral from the narrative, and really helps the audience find themselves.
Surveillance: Information useful for living (e.g. Weather, traffic news, holiday bargains etc) E-Media such as Twitter, helps on extreme levels, as it enables those whom consume it to keep updated with perhaps any breaking news or anything going on locally to an individual. It really brings the whole world to your hands and opens your eyes everything trending. TV wise, any news channel or programme features broaden ones horizons. So for logical thinkers looking to keep up with the world will benefit from such sites and really gather a strong understanding
